Super Ultra Mega Blaster Shoot’em’up

SUMBS was my first game created and was part of a university assignment. it was a group project created by myself and 3 other people. The purpose of the assignment was to lean the fundamentals when creating a game. During the process i learnt my limitations and how far I could go when creating a game. And realized its the first step in creating games and that these skill are easily transferable to other game engines and programming.

This game contains 3rd party images and animations taken from the internet and other games the main one being the character sprites being used from gunstar heroes.

Working with Multi-Media Fusion

Before christmas in my first term studying Computer Game Development at university we where set a group assignment to create a MMF game. The purpose of the assignment was to demonstrate good team work and show good technical ability from all members of the group.

We went though all the basic processes to designing and creating a game. we first started out with the idea of a game and the group quickly came to a decision of what game we would all like to make. We wanted to make a running shooter game like the old retro games you would find on
sega or nintendo. We came up with the wire frame drawings not long after as the design of the game needed to be able to adapt to mobile applications.

From there we created a simple description for the game that would describe the game for professional promotional use.

We were inspired with the name Super Ultra Mega Blaster Shoot’em’up by Aristotle, a Greek Philosopher of the Macedonian city of Stagirus. He was quoted as saying ‘’this was the sickest thing he has ever seen come out of Athens in the last 100 years.’’

Super Ultra Mega Blaster Shoot’em’up is a side scrolling shoot’em’up with the main principal being shooting and scrolling. You follow the life of a bad young boy who was killed he was thus sent to Hell, but it was Satan’s day off (He doesn’t work Sundays, day of rest and all) so he was automatically sent back to earth, his first task was to find the people who killed him and kill them even harder.

We have a range of cosmetics so you can kill in style anything from the simple black robe right up to the Pretty in Pink Princess dress. We hope to add more cosmetics in the future.

This is an Early Access game and anything and everything is subject to change.

We also constructed a mood board to get a feel for the type of colours and graphics we should use in the game taking inspiration from similar games and others themes and textures that relate to the game.

From this this point we then started to construct and build the game. we where all novices and where all still a bit wet behind the ears when creating the game as all we had done in class was create a simple platform game.

We got a few weeks into making the game and came to a stand still and had gotten stuck with progress and restricted ourselves with what we could do within our own conditions. It was at this point we decided to start from scratch and take a different approach to creating the game. It was at this point I discovered global variables within MMF. From this point onwards everything that we wanted to do within the game fell into place like pieces of a puzzle and that decision to start again was the best idea for the group. From there it was more a progress of time and what we could do with the time restraints while still figuring out what we can do in the game as a lot of things we where able to do we did not know was possible until we did it. When it came to the last week before we was due to present the games we had enough to demonstrate our technical abilities but lacked in graphics but that was not the purpose of the assignment. Overall the game went well but i believe we could have benefited from some kind of time management system or methodology like scrum as our group was not as equal as we hoped when it game to contributing to work but nether the less we where sufficient enough to have a successful game and one that people can play with enjoyment.
